The problem was, that nobody had told Wayne that…..For four sets he was the ‘Real Deal’…..the darts going into double 18 like magnets.

Phil’s victory dance, I described as “a two-year-old bouncing over the jumps in the 3.30 at Uttoxeter!”. If there had been any skyscrapers in Stoke, he would have jumped on top of one and screamed his defiance at the gods of darts.

In 28 years of The Geordie Lip on darts – this ranks as one of the top six comebacks of all-time……it almost matches Phil’s gritty grapple from 4-1 down in 2004 against Kevin Painter. It was one of the best matches I have ever seen!

Thank goodness I had a very quiet Hogmanay in the posh Holland Park district of London. As Irene and the family hit the Moet, and the Chablis, I indulged in two bottles of “Fursty Ferret” real ale.

So, at the end of the night, I was seeing more of the TV fireworks, than the rest of the party. But I did lower the tone by going ‘First Footing’ in the mews with my son Daniel, with a bottle of whisky in one pocket and a lump of coal in the other. I thought some of the neighbours thought we were potential burglars!

In Geordie Land and Scotland, this traditionally symbolises warmth and sustenance.

Now back to bed for tantric breathing exercises, in readiness for the final!
