The unicorn oceanic masters is a dart event substantially growing every year.Players from all over the oceanic region are eligible to enter including Australians,New Zealanders,Fijians and all island nations of the pacific. The event in 2008 will be in its seventh Year. The event has Twice been won by Barry Jouannet and Warren Parry and once each by Simon Whitlock and Mitchell Clegg.
The event allows players to participate in an event that if successful in victory propels them instantly to the world stage and bright lights of the PDC World championships.A once in a lifetime experience for most players outside of Europe.
Most recently the Oceanic Masters Moved from its original home in Gosford NSW Australia to the scenic city of Christchurch situated on the south island of New Zealand.
When Dartplayers Australia the promoters of the Unicorn Oceanic Masters were approached by the Executive and dart players of New Zealand back in 2006 to consider moving the event from Australia to New Zealand it was first thought about with great optimism.
Dartplayers in Australia had become familiar with the event on its shores and players from all over Australia and New Zealand were attending the event often booking theyre trips sometimes upto a year in advance to compete in the event. What would the consequences be of moving such a tourmament off Australian Shores?
The Unicorn Oceanic Masters of 2007 was the most successful in its history far beating previous years with attendences and support. So pleased with the organising committee of the 2007 Unicorn Oceanic Masters The promoters Dartplayers Australia have decided to return the event to New Zealand in 2009.
The Event each year also hosts the Australia Vs New Zealand Annual Darts Test match between mens and ladies teams from both shores. For those uniblog readers who arent aware of the sporting rivalry between Australia and New Zealand its abit like a Liverpool Vs Man United Soccer game. The atmosphere of holding this test match in New Zealand was electric.A crowd of easily over 150 people saw and witnessed a great night of darts with the New Zealand men just sneaking home over the top of the aussies in a 1001 leg teams game shootout that had the room buzzing.Hometown support was strong as is their commitment to the sport of darts and players and supporters alike in New Zealand should be commended for attending a great darts event.
I would like to give special mention to the ladies of the Australian Darts Team who between the 4 of them spent well over $5000 of their own money to commit to playing for their country.Amanda Fish,Margie Tonkin,Simone Keogh and Kate Gifford. You have all done your country and yourselves proud for these efforts.
Special Thanks to Richard Lowy Sales Director of Unicorn for making the trip down to our part of the world and as special guest and most of all major sponsor of this event.
