Peter Manley was forced to dig deep before booking his place in the last 16 of the Ladbrokes.com World Championships. Unicorn’s World No.5 had to come from 3-2 down against London qualifier Jason Clark – eventually winning 4 sets to 3 – to set up a 3rd Round clash against either Mark Walsh or Dennis Smith. In the end, experience told as Manley won 6 of the last 7 legs and won the match in style with a classy 99 check-out. “I am just relieved to get through,” he admitted. “I know I will have to play a lot better than that if I want to go a long way in this tournament.” Manley started the match with a 137 finish and won the first set comfortably. Despite nailing a brilliant 156 check-out in the second, ‘One-Dart’ lost his touch, as Clark stormed back. He looked in trouble. Clark was looking full of confidence. Manley though, wasn’t to be denied. “It’s been difficult to prepare,” he revealed. “We have just moved house and haven’t been able to have a proper family Christmas. The important thing is that I am still in there fighting.” Elsewhere, Gary Welding – who beat Unicorn’s Colin Lloyd – marched through. He beat Dutchman Erwin Extercatte. American John Kuczynski overcame Jan Van der Rassel in a thriller, which went to a final set sudden-death leg. The shocks continued as World No.8 Andy Jenkins was beaten 4-3 by qualifier Wayne Jones.
