Team Unicorn quartet of John Part, Adrian Lewis, James Wade and Bob Anderson all narrowly failed in their first bid to qualify for the Las Vegas Desert Classic….but they all get a second chance to make their mark at the Mandalay Bay Hotel on Tuesday. Raymond Van Barneveld though, has won through to the main draw. Barney was one of eight men to book their ticket into Wednesday’s 1st round draw. The top 12 in the World are joined by four Americans and then eight players from two days of qualifying. Lewis just missed out on an automatic spot because he was No.13 in the World – and he was edged out 4 legs to 2 by Irishman Mick McGowan in the final game. John Part and James Wade also fell at the final hurdle. The Canadian was beaten 4-2 by Andrew Hamilton, while Wade lost by the same score to the in-form veteran John Magowan, who of course reached the semi-finals on the UK Open in Bolton a fortnight ago. Bob Anderson reached the last 32 on the 1st day of qualifying – but was another victim of Magowan’s – losing 4-1. Barneveld beat Colin Osborne 4-3 in his final match, while American Bill Davis was another qualifier – beating countryman Roger Carter to win a place in the main event, which starts on Wednesday – live on Sky Sports. Other last 32 losers included Chris Mason, Steve Beaton, Mark Walsh and Barrie Bates. All the Unicorn stars now face an anxious Tuesday, with one last chance to get through to the Desert Classic.
