Ray Carver has failed in his bid to qualify for the 2007 World Championships at the Circus Tavern. Team Unicorn’s latest signing lost out in a play-off, which saw great friend Bill Davis reach the World Championships for the first time. John Kuczynski has also qualified for Purfleet, as his reward for the best American performance at the World Series of Darts, when he beat Unicorn’s Las Vegas champion John Part. Carver lost his play-off semi-final to Darin Young 5 legs to 2, while Davis beat Brad Wethington 5-4. Davis then beat Young 5-2 to win through to the Circus Tavern. As it turned out, if Carver had won his 1st round clash against Mick McGowan in Las Vegas, that would have been enough to secure his return to the World Championships. He won the opening two legs against McGowan but fell away to lose 6-3. In the 2006 Championships, Carver caused one of the big shocks – beating Ronnie Baxter in the 1st round. The American left-hander came agonisingly close to beating Andy Smith in the 2nd round, before losing in a final set tie-break. All is not lost though for Carver, because he will surely enter the World Championship qualifiers which take place at the start of December, when 16 places for Purfleet are up for grabs. It will mean a trip to England to compete but Carver is determined not to miss out on the chance to play in the 2007 World Championships. BY STUART PYKE
