Team Unicorn new boy Andy Hamilton faces a tough ride if he is to qualify for the SkyBet World Grand Prix in Dublin. ‘The Hammer’ could face Raymond Van Barneveld again, as he bids to get through to the lucrative TV stages at the City West Hotel. Only four prized places are up for grabs at the qualifiers, which take place in Newport next weekend and Hamilton is in the toughest quarter of the draw. His first match is against former World Champion Richie Burnett and a match against Barney looms large down the line…..remember, Hamilton beat Barneveld in the qualifiers for the World Matchplay and then enjoyed that brilliant run to the semi-finals in Blackpool, before losing a thriller to Phil Taylor. Barney starts against talented youngster Adrian Gray. The nail-biting qualifying tournament takes place on Friday on a big weekend of darts in South Wales, with a big Players Championship event and the first UK Open Regional tournament taking place on the Saturday and Sunday. Unicorn’s American ace Ray Carver is flying over as he aims to win a place in Dublin at the end of next month. His first match is against Jason Lowe and he is on the same board as David Pugh and the seeded Jimmy Mann. Another Unicorn star Robbie Green will also have to do it the hard way. He is in the same quarter as Hamilton and Barneveld. ‘Kong’ plays Darren Williams first up and top American John Kuczynski is also on his board. It won’t be easy either for Unicorn Contender Michael Barnard…..he kicks-off against Martin Burchell, with Gary Welding on the same board…..Welding has qualified for the last two World Grand Prix tournaments. Alex Roy, Alan Caves and Matt Clark are in the same quarter of the draw. 128 players will be battling it out for those four spots. The format is best of nine legs in all matches, with a double start and finish. Make sure you stay in touch with the Unicorn website next weekend. There will be reports each night on the World Grand Prix qualifiers, Players Championship and the UK Open Welsh Regional. BY STUART PYKE
