He may be 61-years-old but John Lowe is still in great demand and still winning! Unicorn’s three-times World Champion has just got the better of old rival Eric Bristow in a special Legends Challenge in Tenerife. Darts is a growing sport on the holiday island and Lowe beat ‘The Crafty Cockney’ 10 legs to 5 in front of a packed house of 600. He also beat Tenerife’s top darts player Callum McCorrie by 6 legs to 2. “They now have two leagues running on the island and darts just gets bigger every time I go over there. Hopefully the Legends Challenge can become a regular event because on the night, you couldn’t get a ticket for love nor money!” Lowe explained. And Lowe has revealed he is plotting another crack at the World Championships. He intends to be at Villa Park at the beginning of December for the PDPA qualifiers, when 16 places for Purfleet are up for grabs. “I would love to play at The Circus Tavern again and I will prepare properly for the qualifiers and give it a real good go on the day. It’ll be tough because the other players all want the scalp of John Lowe!” ‘Old Stoneface’ has recently made the decision not to play in all the PDC events and won’t be on the new Pro Tour in 2007. He explained why: “You have to be totally focused on playing the whole tour and 30-odd weekends…or not – and that isn’t for me any more. I don’t want to chase ranking points week in, week out any more….but I will still try to qualify for all the major TV tournaments.” Lowe is still one of the biggest names on the exhibition circuit and spends half the year abroad playing and promoting the sport. He was recently in Tokyo on a promotional tour for Unicorn with Bob Anderson. Later this month ‘Lobo’ is returning to the Caribbean to host the Barbados Darts Festival for a 2nd year. He is also leading the bid to set up a Legends Tour – made specifically for television. He said: “ It would be a great format and I am sure we would pack out venues up and down the country. Lowe, Bristow, Deller, Anderson and Bobby George have all expressed an interest and I am sure it will happen….watch this space!” Wouldn’t it be great to see Lowe back at the Ladbrokes.com World Championships? Roll on those qualifiers in Birmingham! BY STUART PYKE
