South African darts ace Wynand Havenga is the latest capture by Team Unicorn, as he prepares to take on the best in the world at the Ladbrokes.com World Championships next month.
Havenga recently won the South African Masters tournament in Johannesburg to earn his place at the Circus Tavern and it is another significant signing in Unicorn’s development of the sport around the darting world.
Team Unicorn already covers Europe, Australia and the USA and the company played a major role in helping to organise the first ever South African Masters.
Havenga, who’s from Cape Town, came through a field of 100 players to become the first South African to play at the World Championships. His prize was a package worth over £5,000 to cover travel and accommodation at Purfleet and he will also pocket a minimum of £3,500 for qualifying for the biggest darts show on earth.
It has been a whirlwind few weeks. At the two-stage qualifiers, all the players had to compete to throw a single leg of 501 in the fewest darts. Havenga’s 13-darter earned him a place in the quarter-finals and he went on to beat Paul Meyer by 4 legs to 1 to complete his darting dream.
Unicorn’s 13-times World Champion Phil Taylor was on hand in Johannesburg to present Havenga with the trophy and ‘The Power’ also played some of the South African’s in an exhibition.
“It has been an amazing time,” admitted Havenga, who is now eagerly awaiting the draw for the World Championships, which is scheduled to take place live on Sky Sports in early December.
