Welshman Barrie Bates claimed the second Players Championship event in Holland, with a stunning victory over Phil Taylor.
The Team Unicorn star lost out in a thriller, after a dramatic day in Lisse – with Taylor just missing a spectacular 9-dart finish in the final.
‘The Power’ hit eight perfect darts and just missed double 12 inside the wire but then nailed double six for a 10 dart leg to make it one set apiece.
It was a great final…..Bates led 2-1 and was sat on 32 for the match, when Taylor produced a 133 finish but the Welshman wasn’t to be denied his first ever title on the Pro Tour. Bates won the tournament in a final leg decider.
Taylor, who has already won three Players Championship events in the last couple of months, paid credit to Bates. “Full credit to him,” he said. “I thought when I took out that 133, it might break his spirit but he came back well and played a fantastic final leg.”
It was a tough tournament for Taylor. In the semi-finals, he had to dig deep to see off Unicorn stablemate Andrew Hamilton by 3 sets to 2 and he also beat Dutch teenage sensation Michael Van Gerwen in a classic 4th Round tussle.
Van Gerwen, who had earlier beaten both Raymond Van Barneveld and John Part, led ‘The Power’ by 2 sets to 1, before Taylor’s experience won the day.
Bates beat Kevin Painter, Roland Scholten, Mark Dudbridge and Colin Monk en route to his victory. He actually came from two sets down to win his semi-final against Monk.
It was a day of mixed fortunes for the Team Unicorn stars. Bob Anderson enjoyed a great run to the quarter-finals, before losing to Monk. Peter Manley, Adrian Lewis and Painter lost in the 3rd Round…..Manley ousted 3-2 by Steve Beaton, Lewis losing by the same score to Dave Askew and Painter was beaten 3-2 by Bates.
There was no repeat of Saturday’s triumph for Colin Lloyd, who lost in the 2nd Round to Jan van der Rassel. James Wade and Wes Newton were beaten at the same stage by Colin Osborne and Chris Hook respectively.
