Kevin Painter proved he’s still got what it takes, producing a brilliant performance to win the John Smith’s 128 Classic at Eastbourne.
‘The Artist’ is determined that the darts world will see him back to his very best in 2007 and this title will be a massive confidence boost to Painter, who has slipped out of the world’s top ten.
The event was dominated by Team Unicorn.
Painter beat Wes Newton 5 legs to 4 in the final to pocket a winner’s cheque of £2,000. He was 4-2 up before Newton came back to take the final into a deciding leg, which Painter won against the throw in just 14 darts.
“This will set me up nicely,” said Painter. “There were only a dozen or so PDC players at the event because it is not on the Pro Tour any more, so doesn’t count towards the Order of Merit but I was pleased with the way I played – especially in the last leg of the final against Wes.”
He added: “I only really went down to get in some tournament practice but it turned out to be a great day!”
Painter, who’d earlier beaten Chris Mason 4-0, beat Kent County player Jim Withers in the quarter-finals and then disposed of Team Unicorn new boy Kirk Shepherd in the semi-finals – again by 4 legs to nil.
The other semi-final was also an all Unicorn affair, with Newton beating Welsh star Barrie Bates 4-2.
Painter will now be hoping to take this form into this weekend’s UK Open Regional in Bristol.
