Terry Jenkins is through to the quarter-finals of the World Matchplay in his first tournament as a Team Unicorn Maestro. Two-times Blackpool finalist John Part ran out of steam and he was ground into submission by another terrific display from ‘The Bull’. Jenkins will now face either Michael Van Gerwen or Ronnie Baxter in Thursday’s quarter-final. “That was tough but I was very pleased with my finishing,” he said. “It has been an amazing 18 months – let’s hope it continues!” Six of the first ten legs went against the throw but from five apiece, it was Jenkins who took control. Part, who has been in such good nick, lost his range and the Canadian won only three more legs, including a 142 finish. But Part was always chasing and when he had the chances, he didn’t take them. Jenkins averaged 93 to Part’s 92 but he had 27 attempts at a double and hit 13. Part nailed eight from 16 but Jenkins created far more winning opportunities. In the other 2nd Round match, it was Roland Scholten who booked his quarter-final ticket against either Phil Taylor or Kevin Painter. The Dutchman was lethal on the doubles in a match which featured 13 180s. In the last 1st Round match, Raymond Van Barneveld was pushed all the way by Denis Ovens, before he clinched a nervy 10-7 victory. There was only one break of throw in the match – in the 6th leg – and that was enough to take Barney through to a 2nd Round clash with Unicorn’s Barrie Bates. Barney missed 22 doubles and his average was 95.62. “I was a bit nervous out there,” he said. “It was in my mind how badly I played in the Premier League at the Winter Gardens, so I am just glad to get that first match out of the way!” On Tuesday afternoon, the Unicorn trio of James Wade, Adrian Lewis and Andy Hamilton all won through to the 2nd Round, despite being far from their best. All missed a stack of doubles but they scraped through to the next stage. Wade beat Wayne Jones 10-7, Hamilton averaged only 79 in winning a poor affair against Team Unicorn stablemate Mick McGowan and Lewis – despite being at half pace – coasted to victory over former World Champion Steve Beaton, to set up a showdown with ‘The Hammer’ on Wednesday night.
