Phil Taylor started the defence of his World Darts Trophy crown in style – beating Vincent van der Voort – to set up a 2nd Round clash against another Dutch ace Roland Scholten. Certainly, all eyes were on Unicorn’s 13 times World Champion after his recent barren spell but he handled the pressure and the hype superbly – eventually winning by 3 sets to 1. ‘The Power’ started the match with a brilliant 11 dart leg and finished it with a classy 140 finish! His end average was 99 and he now gets a day off, before facing Scholten on Wednesday. In fact, he was averaging 106 after the first set, only to see Van der Voort level the match. The 2nd set went the distance and the Dutchman won it on double top with Taylor ready to pounce. But that was as close as Van der Voort got….Taylor went into cruise control and won six of the next seven legs to wrap up a convincing win, with the 140 winning check-out hopefully being a sign of things to come over the next few days. And Taylor will go into his match against Scholten full of confidence and belief and knowing that ‘The Tripod’ has a dreadful record against him! Terry Jenkins was pushed all the way by Dutchman Co Stompe….with ‘The Bull’ forced to come from 2 sets to 1 down to win and set up a clash with Shaun Greatbatch in the 2nd Round on Wednesday night. The Unicorn star started brilliantly and finished superbly….he had to, as Stompe put in arguably his best TV display for some time. Jenkins was awesome in the opening set, producing finishes of 96, 156 and 120 but was pegged back, as Stompe won the next two……Jenkins had to find something special and did – as two 14 darts legs gave him the 4th set and he held his nerve in the decider, when double top clinched victory. He averaged 93 but it was his finishing that proved the big difference – a 48 per cent check-out rate was, in the end, too good for Stompe. Elsewhere, a new slim-line Shaun Greatbatch took advantage of missed doubles to beat Darryl Fitton, while Roland Scholten produced the goods in the all-Dutch affair against Remco van Eijden. It seems there’s no grey area with Scholten….he is either very good or very poor!
