It was the match of the World Darts Trophy so far, but it was all about Peter Manley, who despite suffering from a leg injury, beat Australian No.1 Simon Whitlock to book his place in the quarter-finals. Andy Hamilton is also through to the quarter-finals, after a great victory over Jelle Klaasen but John Part is out – beaten in a terrific tungsten tussle by Gary Anderson. Manley was at his very best and will now face Anderson in those quarter-finals, as his love affair with Holland continues! Remember, he reached the final of the Masters of Darts earlier in the year. The Unicorn ace and the Aussie both averaged over 100 going into the 4th set and it was Manley who yet again, used all his experience, to beat Whitlock in the deciding set. But what a match! Whitlock took the opening set with a superb 128, as Manley was lining up a possible 10 darter….. ‘One Dart’ lived up to his nickname to take the 2nd set and a 101 finish helped the man from Carlisle to a 2 sets to 1 advantage. Whitlock then sent the game into a decider….Manley missing doubles in that 4th set but the Unicorn star came up trumps in the decider with some fantastic finishing….97, 117 and 95 and that was that! He averaged 96, hit five 180s and checked-out at 50 per cent. It was Manley at his very, very best! Hamilton whitewashed the former BDO World Champion, to show the big Dutch audience what is all about…..it was a masterful display by ‘The Hammer’. Klaasen missed darts to win the opening set, as Hamilton produced a 13 darter to take it and another double top gave the man from Stoke a two set advantage. Although Klaasen started the 3rd set with a 140 finish, Hamilton wasn’t to be denied. He may have only averaged 87 but a fantastic 60 per cent check-out rate was the difference and he now faces a quarter-final against BDO World Champion Martin Adams on Thursday night…Adams edged out Dennis Priestley. John Part gave it a real good go against current IDL Champion Gary Anderson but just came up short in their 2nd Round clash…..some classy finishing won the day for Anderson, who finished with a 60 per cent check-out rate! The Canadian could only stand and watch as Anderson kept producing magical check-outs at key moments in their 2nd Round clash…..Anderson took the 1st set with a brilliant 151 – but the Unicorn star stormed back to level the match without dropping a leg in the 2nd set. It was high quality stuff…..Anderson took out 142 and then 111 to make it 2 sets to 1, before the match reached a pivotal point. Part missed darts to go 2 legs up in the next and paid the price, because Anderson took full advantage and for good measure, he checked out 98 to win the match. Both players averaged around 93 and both hit four 180s but Anderson’s finishing on the night was supreme. Tuesday’s 2nd Round results (best of 5 sets): Gary Anderson 3-1 John Part Andy Hamilton 3-0 Jelle Klaasen Martin Adams 3-1 Dennis Priestley Simon Whitlock 2-3 Peter Manley Wednesday’s 2nd Round schedule: Mark Webster v Adrian Lewis Scott Waites v Mervyn King Shaun Greatbatch v Terry Jenkins Roland Scholten v Phil Taylor BY STUART PYKE
