It’s that time of year again, as the best players in the world head for Dublin and the SkyBet World Grand Prix….but for several darts stars, they can be forgiven for having more than one eye fixed on the bigger picture.
The cut-off point for the six guaranteed places in the 2008 Premier League, comes after the Grand Prix…..Phil Taylor, Raymond Van Barneveld, James Wade and Terry Jenkins have already secured their spots, Unicorn’s Peter Manley is – barring a strange twist of fate – set for his fourth consecutive year in the Premier League.
That leaves just one more place up for grabs and the race is on!
Currently, former Unicorn star Colin Lloyd is holding onto No.6 in the PDC Order of Merit but his grasp his loosening, because he is defending at least £14,000 in prize money from Dublin 2005. He won the Irish UK Open Regional (£4,000) and reached the final of the World Grand Prix (£10,000), so the others are sensing their chance to knock Lloyd out of the reckoning.
The lucrative Premier League guarantees every player at least £20,000 and of course the chance to play in front of 5,000 people every week.
Young Unicorn Maestro Adrian Lewis has his destiny in his own hands. He is currently in 7th place - £4,500 ahead of Unicorn stablemate Andy Hamilton. Both players go to Dublin with a clear run, because they are not defending from 2005.
