Just 48 hours after his spectacular return to form in the Premier League, Phil Taylor silenced the critics again, by sweeping to victory in the Southern Players Championship event at Brentwood. Taylor ‘powered’ to victory in the final – beating James Wade by 3 sets to nil, in a tournament dominated by Team Unicorn. Unicorn’s 13 times World Champion is clearly back on song and the confidence is back, because he was totally dominant all day in Essex – the Premier League whitewash of Wayne Mardle just the spark he needed. Team Unicorn made up all four semi-finalists….Wade coming from two sets down to beat Andy Hamilton, while Taylor demolished Adrian Lewis without dropping a single leg. In four of his victories on the day, Taylor won without losing a leg and it was good to see the smile back on the face of ‘The Power’ Wade just missed out on an £11,000 bonus in his first match of the day – an easy win over Tony Littleton…..but he just clipped the wire of D12 for a nine darter! In the final, Wade didn’t get a look in, with Taylor yet again in imperious form, losing only one leg on his way to the £5,000 winner’s cheque. Hamilton and Lewis though, will be happy enough with their runs to the semi-finals, although ‘The Hammer’ will still be wondering how he blew a two set advantage. So, how did the rest of the Unicorn stars fare? Surprisingly, both World Champion John Part and Kevin Painter were early casualties – losing their first matches…..the Canadian beaten by rising star Kevin McDine, while Painter was beaten by Peter Allen. American ace Gary Mawson suffered a preliminary round exit at the hands of Kevin Dowling…..Kirk Shepherd beat Aussie Pat Orreal, before a disappointing defeat by Carlos Rodriguez. Mick McGowan was also beaten in the 2nd Round – going down to fellow Irishman John Magowan and Wes Newton was beaten 3-1 by Steve Hine. Youngster Ricky Williams produced one of the best displays of his career so far – reaching the last 32, where he lost 3-1 to Roland Scholten. At the same stage Colin Osborne was left cursing missed chances, as he lost 3-2 to Chris Mason….Barrie Bates didn’t win a set against Vincent van der Voort and Peter Manley went down 3-1 against Hine. Terry Jenkins fell in the 4th Round – a 3-0 defeat to Mervyn King Results (all best of five sets) Last 16: Phil Taylor 3-0 Chris Mason Wayne Mardle 3-1 Martyn Turner Adrian Lewis 3-2 Andy Smith Mervyn King 3-0 Terry Jenkins James Wade 3-2 Jan van der Rassel Roland Scholten 3-1 Vincent van der Voort Andy Hamilton 3-1 Steve Hine Kevin McDine 3-1 Alan Tabern Losers - £300 Quarter-Finals: Phil Taylor 3-0 Wayne Mardle Adrian Lewis 3-1 Mervyn King James Wade 3-1 Roland Scholten Andy Hamilton 3-0 Kevin McDine Losers - £600 Semi-finals: Phil Taylor 3-0 Adrian Lewis James Wade 3-2 Andy Hamilton Losers - £1,250 Final: Phil Taylor 3-0 James Wade (2-1, 2-0, 2-0) WINNER - £5,000 RUNNER UP - £2,500 BY STUART PYKE
