It was a case of so near, yet so far for Unicorn star Kevin Painter on day four of Championship League Darts at Crondon Park.
‘The Artist’ came second in the group, thanks to a string of impressive performances, and he won five games in style.
But in the final, he just came up short against Mark Walsh.
Painter raced into a 4-2 lead in a thrilling final – hitting a 128 finish and he had five perfect darts in the sixth leg.
But Walsh clawed his way back in and a 120 check-out secured the break back…..he lead 5-4 and Painter then missed three darts to take the match into a deciding leg. Walsh nailed 62 and that was that. He had won four consecutive legs to break Painter’s heart.
Spare a thought for Terry Jenkins!
The Unicorn star dominated the group stages, winning all seven matches, but lost in the semi-finals. He was terrific all day – top heavy scoring, a 170 finish and twice he hit six perfect darts.
But in the semi-finals against Walsh, one break of throw was all it took and despite two 12 dart legs, Jenkins bowed out - £2,400 richer but ultimately hugely disappointed.
Earlier, Jenkins had beaten Walsh 6-5 in the group stages – hitting five 180s, a 161 finish and he won it with a brilliant 10-darter! On this form though, Jenkins should still reach the winner’s group next month.
