Kevin Painter breezed into the 1st Round proper of the World Darts Trophy….. ‘The Artist’ setting up a clash with Welsh star Mark Webster. The Unicorn star, who has recently moved to the West Midlands to improve his practice regime, was on top form on the opening night in Utrecht. It should have been the perfect night for Painter but in the end, he dropped just one set and looked in great touch….he will certainly give Webster, the International Darts League runner-up, a real go in their 1st Round clash on Sunday. In the first Preliminary Round, Painter disposed of Australian Shane Tichowitsch by 3 sets to 1…..he missed lots of chances to win the second set but it didn’t matter, as he reeled off six consecutive legs to cruise to victory. Painter then produced some brilliant finishing to dispatch Mario Robbe by 3 sets to nil in the 2nd Preliminary Round, dropping only two legs in the match and he is looking in the groove! In the all-Unicorn clash, German No.1 Michael Rosenauer beat former World Champion Bob Anderson thanks to a terrific display….He won by 3 sets to 1, hitting four 180s and a 156 finish to wrap up a 3-1 victory. But Rosenauer lost to former World Champion Jelle Klaasen in the 2nd Preliminary Round….the Dutch ace won 3 sets to nil and now faces Raymond Van Barneveld in the 1st Round proper. Peter Manley will face Michael Van Gerwen in a repeat of their clash at the World Matchplay, which the Dutch teenager won with ease…..and Phil Taylor now knows his 1st Round opponent…..UK Open runner-up Vincent van der Voort.
